WEEK 1 WRAP-UP

The boys basketball season got started last week as the freshman team competed in the Webster Groves tournament and the sophomore team competed in the LHS Round Robin tournament. The sophomores started things off early Monday night with a dominant team win over Fox. Contributions were made by all players on the roster and it was a good start to the season. The freshman opened that night as they played host Webster in the first round of their tournament. The team held on to a three point lead with about two minutes left, but could not sustain the defensive pressure of the Statesmen as they ended up dropping the contest in the last minute of the game. The sophomores continued tournament play in the LHS trny when they faced Webster Groves on Wednesday. The results turned out to be about the same for the sophomores as the defensive pressure got to the Flyers and they couldn't pull out the win in fourth quarter. The freshman did not bode very well on Thursday night in the second round of the WG tournament as they were beat by University City in a game that was only close in the 4th quarter. Entering Thursday night's final round game in the LHS tournament, the sophomores found themselves in a position where they could still take home the tournament crown with a win over 2-0 Kirkwood. In a game that saw many lead changes throughout the course of the game. The Flyers pulled out a dramatic win over Kirkwood to win the championship crown for the tournament. The freshman played in the 7th place game at the Webster Groves tournament on Saturday. The Flyers looked great offensively, but did not have an answer to stop Mehlville on defense. Despite 27 points from Nick Brohammer, the Flyers dropped the contest for their 3rd loss in a row. This coming week, the varsity Flyers tip off in the Hillsboro tournament on Tuesday as they take on Festus. Games will continue throughout the week depending on the results. The freshman team will play a B game against Parkway West on Tuesday and then face rival Vianey at home on Thursday.

2009-2010 TEAM POSTER RELEASED

The tradition of a team poster has been brought back this year. Last Wednesday, Kriewall Photography came out before practice to take pictures for the 2009-2010 team poster. The poster is titled, "The Fire Within" and shows face shots of each player with flames in their eyes. Posters will be available for purchase at the home opener on Dec 15. The Flyers will also hold a "JFB/LAA Night" where each youth player will receive a free poster. After the game, the Varsity Flyers will stick around to sign the posters for each youth player. The date for this event will be announced soon.

LHS BASKETBALL IMPROVING WITH NOAH

In June, the basketball program purchased a NOAH Select Shooting machine. This machine is a state of the art system that helps players practice the correct way to shoot the basketball. LHS players started working on the machine this summer and began getting instantaneous feedback on the arc of their shot.

The basketball program is starting a fundraiser to help assist in the purchase of this system. Cards have been sent home with certain players to send out to family, friends, and others to see if they would be willing to help with the purchase of our system. They can also visit online and make their donation by clicking on the link to the right. By visiting the NOAH site, they can learn more about the product as well.
