Lindbergh Basketball News and Notes

08-09 SEASON OFF TO A START

All three levels of the Lindbergh Flyer basketball program have started the 08-09 campaign. Although the starts have been rough, the teams continue to work hard at practice to become better every time they take the floor.

The freshman team got their feet wet with high school basketball by starting out the season in the Webster Groves tournament. Although the Flyers didn't manage to pick up a win, they did learn what it takes to compete at the high school level. They opened up at home against Vianney and turned a 15-point first half defecit into an exciting game only to lose on a heartbreaking last second shot. The sophomore Flyers opened up the season by hosting the Lindbergh JV Round Robin tournament. They opened up with a loss to the Statesmen of Webster Groves to only bounce back and beat the Fox Warriors in the next contest. The sophomores would drop their last game of the round robin tournament to Kirkwood. The Flyers couldn't turn the momentum around though as they would drop their 3rd game to Vianney.

The varsity Flyers have been off to a very rough start to the season. After waiting almost a month to play their first game, the Flyers hosted the Vianney Griffins, and Vianney came out firing on all cylinders while the Flyers simply seemed to never get comfortable at all. With only a day of practice before their next game, the Flyers opened up play in the always competitive Webster Groves Invitational. In the first round, the Flyers played much better and had an inspired third quarter to cut a 20 point lead to 10. The Career Academy Phoenix would however pull away in the fourth quarter as the Flyers continued to struggle to get up and answer the bell. Lindbergh would come out the next night and face conference-foe Marquette in the consolation semi-final, but once again the Flyers had an incredibly tough time scoring and would drop another game to the Mustangs. Lindbergh played in the 7th place game on Saturday morning against Lee's Summit. Missing four players due to the ACT, the Flyers had a short bench to utilize and would drop another game to the Tigers. One exciting news from the weekend was the showing that freshman Blake Welch put on in the 3-point contest at the tournament. After an opening round score of 15 of 18 points to take the lead, Welch would finish 2nd in the final round of the 3-point contest.

All three levels will welcome the Mehlville Panthers on Friday to Lindbergh as they hope to turn their early starts around and pick up wins before the Christmas Break hits. Tipoff times are 4:00 (freshman), 5:30 (sophomores), and 7:00 (varsity).
